How to Craft an “About Me” Page That Actually Converts

Most About pages don’t have a traffic problem.

They have a connection problem.

They’re well-written. Thoughtful. Sometimes even beautifully designed.

But they read like a monologue.

And if your About page is all about you, it’s quietly doing the opposite of what it’s meant to do: helping the right people decide they want to work with you.

Let’s fix that.

Your About Page Isn’t About You (Not Really)

This is the mindset shift everything hinges on:

Your About page is not your biography.

It’s the place where a potential client thinks:

“Oh. They get me.”

Think of it like a first coffee date.

If you sit down and talk only about yourself — your history, your credentials, your journey — you’re not building connection. You’re delivering a TED Talk no one asked for.

Connection comes from common ground.

Start With the Shared Story

The most effective About pages begin where you and your client overlap.

Not with:

  • “Hi, I’m Sarah and I started my business in 2019…”

But with:

  • A frustration they recognise
  • A moment they’ve lived through
  • A thought they’ve had but haven’t articulated

This is where you show them:

“I understand you — and that’s why this business exists.”

When people feel seen first, they’ll keep reading.

Then Tell Your Story (But Make It Optional)

Your story still matters.

Just not upfront.

Once you’ve established connection, invite them deeper.

Share:

  • Why you do what you do
  • What shaped your perspective
  • How your experience informs your work

The key is choice.

Not everyone needs the full origin story to say yes.

On platforms like Showit that I use inside The Click, this works beautifully with:

  • Expandable sections
  • Secondary canvas views
  • “Read more” moments

Let the curious people dive in — without forcing everyone else to scroll.

Stop Listing Values. Show Them in Action.

A list of values sounds nice.

But let’s be honest — most people skim straight past it.

What actually builds trust is seeing what those values look like when someone works with you.

Instead of listing values, try sections like:

What You Can Expect When We Work Together

  • What will always be true
  • How you communicate
  • What you prioritise

What You Won’t Get Here

  • How you don’t operate
  • What you won’t tolerate
  • What you don’t believe in

How I Show Up For My Clients

  • Boundaries
  • Support
  • Decision-making style

These are values — just translated into real life.

Use Fun Facts to Build Real Connection

Fun facts aren’t filler.

They’re filters.

This is where person-to-person connection happens.

If your competitor is a cat person and your dream client is a dog person — and you casually mention your dog is the CFO of your business?

That’s not fluff.

That’s deep meaningful connection right there (you laugh now but…).

These moments help people think:

“Yep. This feels like my kind of human.”

And those tiny signals absolutely influence buying decisions.

Bring It Back to Them

The final job of your About page is direction.

This is the:

“That’s me — now tell me about you.”

moment.

Remind them:

  • Why they came to your site
  • What problem you help solve
  • Where they should go next

Whether that’s:

  • Your services page
  • Your inquiry form
  • A specific offer

Don’t leave them hanging.

Connection without direction doesn’t convert.

The Real Goal of a Converting About Page

A great About page doesn’t convince everyone.

It makes the right people feel like the decision is obvious.

When you stop trying to impress and start trying to connect, your About page becomes one of the strongest sales tools on your site — without sounding salesy at all.

And that’s the sweet spot.
